January 19, 2024: The Prime Minister, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, representing the Head of State, inaugurated PROMETAL 4 and PROMETAL 5, two new steel processing plants that represent impactful assets for the development not only of Cameroon but also of the Central African sub-region.

With a total investment estimated at 57 billion FCFA, these two industrial infrastructures significantly enhance the local processing capacity of metallurgical raw materials and the production of manufactured goods for domestic and industrial use.

Prometal 4: A heavy processing unit

With a construction cost nearing 45 billion FCFA, the plant is a state-of-the-art steel mill. It has an annual capacity of 360,000 tonnes of finished products, including rebar, beams, angles, wire rods, and other metal components.

Notably, Prometal 4 introduces, for the first time in Sub-Saharan Africa, the local production of wire rods, an essential raw material for manufacturing nails, screws, and smooth bars. This technical innovation helps reduce import dependency and boost the competitiveness of “Made in Cameroon.”

Prometal 5: Production of domestic gas cylinders and metal constructions

Prometal 5 consists of two entities: PROGAZ, specializing in manufacturing domestic gas cylinders, and PROFAB, dedicated to metal structures.

The investment here is estimated at 12 billion FCFA, with a production capacity of approximately 600,000 gas cylinders per year and 5,000 tonnes of metal constructions. With national demand estimated at 400,000 cylinders, this unit will enable the country to achieve self-sufficiency while generating an exportable surplus.
